Frederick County Rejects Adjacent Property for Library Expansion

County commissioners 4-1 chose to expand the current C. Burr Artz Library at 100-104 E. Patrick St rather than renovate the nearby adjacent building. A feasibility study showed the adjacent site would cost 2 to 3 million to renovate but would be 48 percent costlier per square foot than upgrading the current 32,000 square foot facility, with ADA upgrades and safety reinforcements driving expenses. The plan to add a $6 million expansion would require about 15 months of closure, and officials said the adjacent option would leave the library among the most inefficient in the state.
