Longwood holiday displays showcase vast chrysanthemum artistry
Chrysanthemums fill Longwood gardens with elaborate indoor and outdoor displays. Fiberglass moss baskets hold nine to ten blooms each, forming 30 inch pots. Global mobiles and 6 foot by 15 foot column forms emerge from wired growth. A living theater curtain, four plants per tub, grows on a metal frame from February to Labor Day. Four fulltime staff plus student aides prune mums and poinsettias, with thousands of plants prepared for Christmas shows running December 14 to January 1 and nightly concerts drawing about 650000 visitors annually.
