Cuyahoga's Radar Troubles Before Final Chesapeake Cruise

Coast Guard inquiry heard the Cuyahoga's radar and electronic gear often malfunctioned in the 10 months before its final voyage. The ship sank after colliding with the freighter Santa Cruz II in Chesapeake Bay, killing one of 29 crew members. Officials said hull design and flooding, not hatch openings, largely caused the rapid sinking. Radar was due for replacement and was operated by inexperienced cadets, with no confirmed radio contact between cutter and freighter.
