Hunters faced rain and fog as the bow and arrow deer season closed today. Only 16 white tails reported by two county check stations, far below last season's 24 kills. Rabbit quail pheasant and grouse seasons start Monday with cooler forecasts and showers. Deer firearms season runs through December 12, with bucks next allowed after December 5.
State Sen. Snyder plans a bill in the west Legislature to require a new prison on grounds of the Reform atory for Males. Officials favor a site near Baltimore for better facilities and Bates supported location there. Snyder argues the reform school has space and staff to support a 1,000 inmate rehabilitation program, easing overcrowding. Astronauts and wives visit New York for a weekend of rest.
Ight Collmus a Frederick County investment broker was named chairman of the Christmas Seal Safe for the Tuberculosis and Public Health Association. The group opens a mass x ray drive with a schedule of sites and days across the county and 1300 letters to mail out to gain support for services including tuberculin testing and patient care.
In Beverly Hills a quiet restaurant meal nearly turned tragic when retired businessman Arthur D. Rose choked on a piece of meat. Dr. Robert Rand, dining nearby, grabbed a steak knife and sliced Rose's windpipe to relieve the obstruction while another diner held a flashlight. Rose is recovering in a hospital.
County banks will mail 434000 in Christmas club payments to residents this year. The total payout across county and city institutions rises to 1197000, up about 65000 from last year. Emmitsburg Farmers State Bank leads county gains with about 48000. Thurmont and Walkersville banks also post increases.
The Maryland Municipal League announced its three day gathering at the Francis Scott Key Hotel with officers elected and resolutions adopted. New officers include Winslow F. Burhans as President and B. Herman Adkins as immediate past president. J Harold Grady becomes council chairman. Hubert F Ryan and Phillip H Goodman are vice presidents. several mayors and council members from across the state named to leadership roles. The group designated Hagerstown as meeting site for 1959 and outlined resolutions praising Fredericksburg hospitality and urging state actions on storm water disposal and railroad speed regulation. The report notes Cuba political turmoil and future conventions in Rockville Cumberland Havana and other cities.
Mrs. George B. Douglas was named executive secretary of the Frederick County Heart Association replacing Mrs. Charles T. Butcher who resigned effective December 1. The board approved the appointment and resignation at a directors meeting. In St Louis a robber fled a market and jumped into a parked car with a gun thinking it was his escape vehicle. Inside was Homer McAfee and his wife, who grappled with the bandit and disarmed Joseph Williams, 38. Williams admitted stealing 375 from Mrs McAfee and 300 from a cash register before realizing the car owner was not the accomplice. Williams claimed the other man provided the gun. Police took Williams into custody after the confrontation.
New York AP reports steel strike slow to unwind as furnaces run at about 46 percent capacity. Auto industry worsened shortages cutting production, while retailers doubt a robust Christmas. GM and Chrysler idled lines. railroads and coal mines restart gradually. 10,000 to be called at Ternstedt plant. Altoona plant outsized impact. Syracuse carriers furlough 3100. merchants brace for limited post strike purchases.
Police investigated two morning crashes on South Bentz and Motler streets. Esther A Phelps of RFD Frederick and Bernard M Campbell of Baltimore faced charges after a rear end collision on South Bentz near the American Legion home. Phelps charged with reckless driving. A second incident on Motler street involved J Ronald Peltz of Baltimore who drove over a curb, caused about $250 damage, and said he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Lt Ralph Potts and Cpl Paul Mossburg investigated.
A winter storm marching from the Rockies into the Midwest and Great Lakes brought cold rain, heavy snow in Montana and Illinois, and record lows in Nebraska. The system caused dozens of deaths, dangerous driving, and widespread travel disruption across the eastern two thirds of the United States.
City Police report a man hid in Colonial Tavern on South Market Street after closing, then escaped with $25 from a bowling game machine. The tavern, owned by Mrs. William Zimmerman, closed at midnight and was found with an open door by a waitress who had left briefly. Detective Sergeant Sherman Boone leads the investigation.
Two cars collided head on on a foggy highway near Chesapeake Bay injuring five and killing one. Ernest Benjamin Banks 59 of Oxford died in the crash. Ray Eugene Faulkner 24 of Easton was in critical condition with others injured. The accident occurred on Marxland 333 about two miles east of Oxford in Talbot County.
The State Roads Commission installed flashing amber and red signals at the Route 26 353 intersection near Worman's Mill to reduce accidents after heavy traffic shifts from the Frederick Freeway. District Engineer Thomas G. Mobler said two amber signals face each Route 26 lane and red signals govern Route 355 traffic. Stop signs prior to the change failed to curb unsafe crossings. Crews complete the signals this week as final surface work on the Frederick Freeway and new Route 15 segment nears winter completion. Some Route 27 segments from Burkinsville to Middletown will not finish this winter, though select sections may open.
AP reports in San Francisco that mail sent to Hawaii Philippines and Formosa reaching there on November 7 was jettisoned from a Military Air Transport Service Globemaster on November 10 after loss of two engines. The aircraft dumped 11 tons of cargo to return to Hamilton Air Force Base.

In western Montana a blizzard left two students stranded in a cabin for over two days. Rich Maxwell of Warm Springs and Robert Amick of Billings relied on cocoa and beans for nutrition. Maxwell hiked six miles to summon help while Amick, with a knee ailment, remained nearby.
