Clinton veto deepens Medicare premium fight and shutdown risk
The amendment opposed by Mr Clinton would raise Medicare Part B premiums and cancel a scheduled cut. In a rare early morning veto ceremony Clinton proposed bills to extend spending and borrowing authority without GOP add-ons as massive federal furloughs loom. White House aides said talks with Sen Domenici aimed to find a reasonable partner while Congress advances a stopgap funding bill. A partial shutdown threatens Tuesday with 800,000 civilian workers sent home, but many crucial personnel stay on. Treasury moved to avoid default with emergency steps and by tapping two large government retirement funds to temporarily boost borrowing authority.
