Using corn crop residues to cut winter feed for beef cows
Farmers can slash winter costs by feeding dry pregnant and mature beef cows corn crop residues during the first 50 to 60 days of winter grazing. Residues supply 40-45% TDN, with 18-24 pounds daily intake meeting most energy needs. A 90-100 bushel per acre corn field can feed one mature cow for 50-40 days, at 80% lower cost than hay or silage.
