Fire on a Warship Torpedo Boat Saved by Heroism
In Norfolk on November 13 Lieutenant Roland L. Curtin and several seamen on torpedo boat destroyer Lawrence saved the craft from destruction. A lighted candle left on a woolen box caused a fire in a forward compartment near the magazine, filling the area with dense smoke. Curtin repeatedly entered the blaze to rescue unconscious sailors, and after rapid resuscitation, both seaman and officer recovered. Five seamen were stretched on a dry dock and later revived. damage to the Lawrence was trifling. Gold Medal For Peary.
