Weekly jobless claims fall to 355000 in late October

The Labor Department reports 355000 first time unemployment claims for the week ended Oct 31, down from 360000. It marks the lowest level in over two years, with the four week average at 364500. States showing declines included Ohio Missouri New York California and Iowa while Michigan and Illinois posted increases. The national rate stood near 7.4 percent with analysts divided on near term gains.

Mount St Marys College plan on hold amid faculty input

Fagan charged with wife's murder in Monrovia

William R Fagan 45 of Rankles Drive Monrovia was charged with first degree murder for the death of his wife Deborah Patricia Fagan 30 also of Monrovia. He remained in custody of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office at press time. The body of Deborah Patricia Fagan was found.

Veterans Day doubts cast shadow over hospital salute

In Baltimore 14 NSA members visited 150 Veterans Affairs Medical Center patients as flags were handed out and a staff sign proclaimed everyday is Veterans Day. Bill Sparks, a Navy veteran from Catonsville who saw heavy naval gunfire in Korea, voiced concerns that many veterans may be discharged and left without shelter or meals. He said the men here are bent and broken for a sense of honor.

Michigan man rides bike to Veterans Day service in Frederick

Michigan man Martin Smith 24 rode six days to Frederick for Veterans Day ceremonies at Memorial Park. He saluted a color guard with his Army background, while about 200 gathered under light rain near North Bentz and Second Streets. The Francis Scott Key Post 11 American Legion sponsored the event as umbrellas rose with flags and residents reflected on veterans and ongoing needs.

Gas tanker crash on I-270 claims third victim in Maryland

A fiery Oct 19 crash on I 270 in Bethesda killed Emil Gross, 55, of Cleveland, and truck driver Wayne Frebert, 23, with Jeante Pile of Arlington also among the dead. Police said the tanker carried 4 000 gallons of gasoline and that witnesses saw Gross flee in flames before assistance. Investigators question drivers about what happened as repair work continues on a damaged bridge over the Beltway.

Staff Reports say the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee aims to unveil a monument for 95 services. Spokesman Tom Nisty Sug says planners have a concept of a black granite stone to be placed at North Kertz and West Seceyt Streets, with approval from US areas and local officials.
