The Israeli attack on Tyre’s eight story military headquarters left at least 41 dead and 60 missing, with 26 Israelis and 11 Arabs among the dead. Beirut papers report 500 arrests linked to the blast as crews sought survivors nearly 24 hours after the explosion. Investigators weigh accident versus a major terrorist strike since the Lebanese invasion.

An 18 year old gunman James Q Stevens who held nine hostages during a 21 hour siege at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke Virginia is held without bail awaiting arraignment on nine counts of abduction and one count of using a firearm to commit a felony. Police say he fired about six shots but no one was injured during the incident which began after an argument with his girlfriend Rebecca Golas, 17 who had rejected his marriage proposal.

The Miss Maryland School for the Deaf Pageant, sponsored by the Junior National Association of the Deaf, was held Thursday night at Ely Auditorium on the MSD campus. Olivia Thompcom of Hagerstown won Miss MSD. her court includes Delores Carole Abbott Barbara Anna Eyler Cheryl Lynn Hackley Deborah Jean Hartman Sharyn Dynette Mapp Karen Yvette Price Susan Theresa Oliver Lori Ann Sherwood and Robin Leigh White.
Thompson written underneath the pageant featured weeks of practice by faculty and students. Chair Bette Hicks led with Rick Schoenberg and Deborah Stokes assisting. Special guests included Barbara Tubbs Michelle Smith and Lori Kronick. Master of ceremonies Mark Rust kept the event moving while teachers signed for the audience.
A program helps deaf students, including Miss MSD a cheerleader and drama club member, learn sign language. Her interests include sewing, reading, swimming, and horseback riding.
Martial law authorities signed the release order for Solidarity leader Lech Walesa and said he would depart the Arlamow government resort on Saturday. He is planned to travel to Gdansk to reunite with his wife and seven children after 11 months in detention.
