Ruling Finds Eastalco Locked Out Workers Eligible for Aid

United Steelworkers Local 7486 members totaling 423 workers were ruled to have faced a lockout rather than a strike during the July 31 to October 24 dispute at Eastalco. The DET decision grants unemployment benefits totaling over 907000 dollars with each member receiving about 195 dollars weekly for the period of eligibility. The ruling was issued Friday by special examiner John McGucken at the Baltimore DET office and could be appealed by Eastalco to the DET board of appeals or higher courts.

Commissioners cut capital projects amid budget squeeze

County officials sliced $15 million from the capital improvements program, hampering roads, schools, parks, sewers and other services. Only $7.3 million in local revenue remains to fund $22.38 million in requests for next year, with education parks and the highway department among the hardest hit. The tentative CIP must be ready by December, with a full budget plan due in spring and adoption in May. Frederick City loses most of its capital asks, and school funding drops from $4.746 million to $2.795 million. Governor policy prompts shifting $295,000 of items into operating funds. highway and engineering lose $3 million, parks cut $347,000, leaving excess requests of about $5.7 million.

Brunswick OK'd plan to build first branch library

County commissioners rejected a simultaneous build for Brunswick and Middletown and approved a plan to have both libraries built within four years. Brunswick offered to donate land and water hookups, while Middletown proposed a one dollar yearly lease with free utilities. The plan envisions phased construction with funds set across fiscal 1987 to 1989, as Walkersville’s 2,500 square foot branch moves toward a July 1987 opening.

Wormarns Mall proposal stalls at Frederick Planning Commission

Rockville developer Robert Wormald pitched Wormarns Mall a 224.1 acre mix of 1397 homes plus parks and commercial space east of U S 45 near the Monocacy River.
