General Leonard Wood arrived at Guantanamo after a storm disrupted the voyage. He met Cuban leaders, inspected military units and hospitals, and insisted on joint governance for reform. Perez accepted Wood’s conditions and was named mayor, while rations were tied to work at 40 cents a day amid bandit activity and shortages.
A Great Northern through train near Fergus Falls Minnesota was held up by eight armed robbers. Two boarded the blind baggage in Fergus Falls and forced the engineer and fireman from the cab. The gang then attacked the express car, blew open both safes, and guarded crew while they looted. One safe yielded money, the other could not be opened. The robbers fled south after about two hours, taking $22 from the engineer.
