In Frederick County 63 percent of 30 804 registered voters cast ballots in the general election. About 1 941 voters abstained, the lowest turnout in a general election since 1950s. Early tallies suggested a record turnout, but booths remained crowded throughout the day. The final vote in Frederick City came at 8 05 p m, after polls closed.
U S Representative Mathias celebrated his eighth wedding anniversary by securing a large majority in Frederick County. He tallied 14,1968 votes against Walter G. Finch who received 501 votes. Mathias pledged responsible representation and reform of the draft, drought relief, and Western Maryland economic improvements. The victory was announced at 10 p.m. at his Key Hotel campaign HQ, with AP declaring the win at 9 p.m. The county turnout figures show rising participation since 1958, and other local races shifted as well with Crummell P. Jacobs unseating Sheriff Buck Alexander.
Reagan's win in California and gains for the GOP marked a nationwide Republican surge.
