Three Vehicle Crash on Route 40 Near Newmarket
A car and two trucks were damaged in a three way collision on Route 40 on the eastern limits of Newmarket yesterday afternoon around 3 29. No injuries were reported. The 1949 Ford truck driven by Harry Oscar Moore of Baltimore crossed the center line and struck the 1950 Oldsmobile driven by Brewer Wi Stouffer of Hagerstown. Stouffer was eastbound in a line of traffic that had stopped. Moore’s truck then was hit by an eastbound tractor trailer driven by Billy Stone of Baltimore. Estimated damages were about 75 dollars to the Stouffer car, 100 dollars to the tractor trailer, and 200 dollars to Moore’s truck. Both truck operators were charged with failure to keep in right of center.

In Eustis Florida on November 9 Sheriff Willis McCall and a deputy were accused by Walter Irvin of shooting him after McCall fired twice at Irvin who lay wounded. Irvin, a defendant in a rape case, alleged Deputy James L Yates shot him as he lay on the ground. Samuel Shepherd, also charged in the same case, was killed Tuesday night while being returned from Raiford. McCall said he fired on the two Negroes when they jumped him during a stop to inspect a faulty fire. Yates declined comment. The two men were being taken toward Tavares for a retrial on rape charges from July 1949. they had been convicted in September 1949 and sentenced to death, but the conviction was reversed by the U S Supreme Court and a retrial ordered.
