Old railroad manifests reveal 1830s travel details in Maryland
S H Bennett, auditor of the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway, preserves relics dating to 1834 and 1835. A conductor’s form lists each passenger’s boarding and alighting points, date, baggage, and fare. Fare from Baltimore to Frederick matched current levels, time greatly longer. One trunk cost 70 cents, another 45 cents, third 20 cents. The way bill recorded seat occupancy with a passenger charged for three and a half seats. Plane No 4 station existed in 1840. Cars were called wagons on freight manifests. Ink remains legible after over a century. The papers likely came from the old B&O freight depot razed for a new station.
