Tunney Calls For Cleanup Of Boxing

Former heavyweight champion Gene Tunney urged cleaning up or outlawing professional boxing in the United States during a West Berlin visit. He supported a federal boxing commissioner to restore the sport's early 1920s image and commented on the Clay Patterson matchup, predicting a Clay KO but criticizing the sport's recent quality. He also doubted Patterson’s durability and praised a clean, prestige-raising bout. Nearby, Max Schmeling and Tunney met for the first time in nearly 30 years.
