Philadelphia dispatch reports Charles E Hughes carried Pennsylvania by a heavy plurality near 300000 over Wilson. Knox won the U S Senate seat, Snyder and Kearney led for auditor and treasurer, with Republicans claiming fourteen of seventeen congressional districts. Heavy industrial districts favored Hughes as party control in state senate and house looked likely.
The Republicana sweep continues as Charles Evan Hughes wins New York state by a substantial majority. Governor Whitman is reelected, Calder gains a U.S. Senate seat, with Hughes showing strong support in New York City. City returns from 1564 of 2127 districts show Hughes leading in the metropolis.
Hughes wins New Jersey by about 40,000 as Walter E. Edge and Joseph Sherman Frelinghuysen, both Republicans, capture governor and U.S. Senate seats respectively. A New York to Pittsburgh express train was wrecked near Portage Pennsylvania when nine freight cars on a parallel track derailed into its path. The locomotive baggage car and one Pullman were derailed but no injuries were reported. The express then sideswiped another freight on a different track, adding to the chaos as all tracks were blocked for hours.
John M. Mc Court federal assistant district attorney announced an investigation into the recent bread price increases. Large baking companies raised loaf prices to six and twelve cents, while small bakers did not raise prices, arguing conditions do not warrant the rise.
New York November 8 Rev Hugo Holmeren pastor of a Swedish chapel founder arrested for serious assault for shooting 10 year old James Long who was playing in front of the parsonage in Harlem. The pastor said children had been annoying him. He was taken to a hospital for examination.
