New York stocks posted little change as traders absorbed signs of gradual economic strengthening. The Dow slipped 3.78 to 3240.06, with weekly gain at 13.78. Big Board volume reached about 206.52 million shares. S&P 500 417.58, Industrials 489.99, Nasdaq 616.82.
The Dow Jones Industrial average finished at 3240.06, down 3.78 points after 4 p.m. trading. NYSE reported 206,520,000 shares traded. New York Gold closed at 337.10 95.
In thin trading Friday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange the Nikkei 225 fell through the 17,000 level and stayed down all day ending at 16,859.81, a decline of 1678 points or 0.95 percent. The dollar finished slightly higher against the yen.
Beneficial Corp of Wilmington reported third quarter earnings of 38.5 million dollars, up 2 percent from a year ago, with 1.33 dollars per share. For the first nine months, earnings rose 13 percent to 1,243 million dollars or 4.63 dollars per share, from 1,104 million dollars or 4.39 dollars per share.
WFRE 99.3 FM becomes a full time country music station and WFMD adds Tommy Grunwell to the WFRE morning show. Spokesman John Feiseler says listener response is positive and notes election week broadcasts and interviews boosted coverage. Grunwell leaves WFMD mornings to join WFRE. WFMD fills 5 to 10 a.m. slot with new lineup and talk shows.
