Changing Large Herd Over To Crossbreds

The 1400 acre farm of Charles W. Collier near Darlington shifts the largest US Jersey herd from purebreds to crossbreds to boost production. Crossbreds average 11,434 pounds of milk and 546 pounds of fat versus 8,000 and 520 for purebreds, with a 60 percent higher production goal of 16,000 pounds of milk and 700 to 750 pounds of fat. Collier cites hybrid vigor, recent crossbred gains, and higher income, and predicts continued crossbreeding will raise returns for dairymen. He criticizes some county agents and college departments for resisting crossbreeding knowledge, and says genetics laws support crossbreeding. Also notes recent crossbred heifers and discusses sodium arsenite weed control for ponds.
