Drinking by pregnant women may retard children
Scientists warn that even moderate alcohol use during pregnancy may cause mental retardation due to fetal oxygen deprivation. Monkeys exposed to ethanol showed umbilical vessel collapse and a two thirds drop in fetal oxygen flow, suggesting a mechanism for fetal alcohol syndrome. The study, led by Mukherjee and Hodgen of NICHD, appears in Science Magazine.
