Hopkins center first equipment via $25,000 irradiator gift
Johns Hopkins Hospital receives a $25,000 blood irradiator as the initial piece for a planned pediatric oncology center. Donor Morton M. Lapides funds the device in memory of Joseph M. Townsley and a Baltimore labor official. The Variety Club of Baltimore backs a $1.5 million fundraising goal, already near $1 million, to build and outfit the facility. The irradiator prepares donor blood for transfusions to prevent graft versus host disease in children with cancer.
