Santiago reports the death of Tomas Batrada Pulton, chief figure of the Cuban republic, on Wednesday night. Governor Magoon ordered a special train to Santiago to console the ex-president’s family and arrange a bedside visit by Tomas Palma’s son and former secretary George Belt as Magoun’s representative.
In Easton on November 5 John Wathore a rural delivery clerk who lived on the city outskirts broke his neck when a railing collapsed at Fourth and Northampton. He was among a group awaiting a trolley car to return home after an election gathering. The railing gave way and the crowd fell into a basement area.
In Wickes Barre Pennsylvania engineer Charlen Young acted within a split second to avert disaster when a mine cage hoisted and lowered repeatedly with miner Charles Ed Wares aboard. Young reversed and kept the engine reversing each time the cage neared the top or bottom until others shut off the steam, saving Wares from death.
New York November 6 The Republican campaign fund list will be made public detailing every contribution The statement was given to the press by Frank J Witebrook chair of the Republican campaign committee The tabulation is nearly finished and a printed form will issue. Mother and son found dead in hotel room New York Mrs F Veit and her son J Nelson Veit a Wall Street broker were found dead Their deaths appear linked with a gunshot a gas asphyxiation and a locked bathroom door suggesting possible self harm following the mother’s death
In New York several men attacked Morris Brooks jewelers in the Bronx. Clerk Harry Silverman was struck and the safe rifled of jewels valued at 49000. Detectives arrived after cries for help and captured Joseph B Atchison a former railroad telegrapher fleeing with a satchel of jewels. The crime occurred in a busy Bronx section.
Winchester Va Nov 5 Roe son of Deputy Sheriff Ashby Roe of Gore county lost his left arm and suffered severe facial burns from a dynamite explosion while disposing of a traction engine. He was injured internally by the blast and is not expected to recover. He is twenty four years old and unmarried.
Captain J. W. Roberta of the schooner Lorna Doone, owned by Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, was washed overboard during a fierce storm near North Sydney while en route from Boston with general supplies for Grenfell’s winter station at St Anthony. The ninety ton vessel was driven by a gale as crew fought to save him.
In a Chicago College of Medicine lecture Dr. A R Hagle described love sickness as a disease. He urged physicians to use mental influence to treat it and suggested finding a new love as a cure for an old infatuation. He praised Bishop Fallows for mind and medicine work in harmony.
Lenox Massachusetts November 5 Alfred Lewis coachman for Maria Bradford of New York hanged himself after buying a balky horse he claimed to be an expert on. The ill tempered animal led to ridicule from other coachmen and his death followed. A separate report from Lowell Massachusetts on November 5 notes Louisa Piette in a prolonged sleep lasting weeks with a feeding tube, her condition unchanged as her mother and sister nurse her at home.
Bay area election fervor ends tragically as Abraha Singer fourteen dies after returning home from Derby celebration. He reportedly celebrated the Democratic mayor’s victory with friends. In Pittsburg a retired Carnegie Steel patternmaker B F Shallenberger aged likely sixty dies of a broken heart after thirty years of service.
