It claims the tonic stabilizes irregularities, relieves inflammation, aids sleep, and strengthens the whole system, with a testimonial from Mrs Selma Erickson of St Paul Minnesota.
Ohio vote shows Herrick Republican wins governor by 114 706 over Tom Johnson Democrat with 900 000 total ballots. Republicans hold 29 to 4 in the senate and 89 to 22 in the house with Hanna poised for re election on joint ballot. Johnson asserts campaign issues centered on industrial disruption and national concerns.
Corrected election returns show George B. McClellan Democrat elected mayor of Greater New York by 63,617 plurality. Borough results split with McClellan carrying Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and others while opponents challenged the overall Democratic lead amid continuing political tension.
Panama proclaims independence from Colombia as the isthmian region seizes control of Panama City. The Colombian gunboat Bogota fires at the city without casualties. Nashville and Dixie US gunboats intervene to maintain order while a provisional cabinet forms led by Obaldia. United States weighs recognition amid de facto government conditions.
William Warren, 41 or 415 years old, a Chester newspaper man, shot himself in a bath room the night before his planned marriage to Miss Lillian Robertson. A letter warned that there would be no wedding. A sealed note was found. coroner nonpublic. Warren had a prior marriage and is said to have a wife in England. The wedding was set at Robertson's parents’ home on Baltimore Avenue with many guests and a decorated house before the tragedy.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania a meeting of anthracite region mine inspectors decided to enforce age related restrictions in breakers and mines. Parents must supply age verification sworn before a justice of the peace or qualified official. Inspectors will demand certificates on inspection rounds to curb underage labor and reduce fatalities.
A series of quake shocks was felt in St Louis and surrounding towns including Louisiana and Clarksville. Reports describe chandeliers swinging and buildings rocking, with no damage. Telephones and residents reported the tremors across northern Missouri and nearby areas.
In Dover Delaware a meeting called by Senator Frank Allee aimed to unite Republican factions for the 1884 presidential campaign. Attended mainly by Union Republicans 185 participants heard Allee read a message from J Edward Addicks urging loyalty to friends but supporting a harmonious party. Proposals favored full adherence to party rules if a single Republican party is formed. Fatal Fight Between Brothers in Wytheville Virginia ends with one brother dead. Ira Valsos and Dick Halsey dueled on Potato Creek. Halsey shot through the heart. Ira is held for trial.
At Tona Island New York on November 5 six workers were killed and ten injured as old shells exploded during unloading from the battleship Massachusetts. Three shell houses were gutted, a hail of fragments blasted across the island, and nearby buildings damaged. Marines battled fires as doctors aided the injured at West Point, Peekskill, and Haverstraw.
In Marple, Chester County, Fred Carpenter, 20, was killed when a loaded pistol misfired while he and a friend knocked apples from a tree on the Theodore Patterson farm near Lamb Tavern. The weapon’s trigger jammed. as Carpenter tried to free it, the gun discharged into his chest. In separate notes, engine pioneer Stephen D. Winner, 51, of Newark, is reported dead at his home, credited as the oldest locomotive engineer, while ELS Platt of St. Louis shot himself in a despondent moment and survived after a lung injury.
Richmond special says Patrick county Virginia man William O'Dell was killed in a fight at Liberty when a stone struck him and he fell breaking his back after striking a jog. The assailants were arrested.
