Suffrage Defeated in Key States as Nation Votes
In Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania New York and Massachusetts voters rejected woman suffrage. New York showed 195,000 against and Massachusetts 132,085 against on a 457,304 total. Allegheny County carried for suffrage, while Philadelphia and several counties delivered large anti majorities. Majorities in western and farming counties favored suffrage, but overall defeat persisted. New York’s counties largely opposed it, with Tompkins and Niagara supportive in small margins. Brooklyn and Manhattan voted heavily against. National AMA leaders faced disappointing returns as results came in.
