Democrats gain control of the County Board of Commissioners with three Democrats and two Republicans on the new panel. In the State Senate delegation Sen Edward P. Thomas and Sen Charles H. Smelser win seats, while the House sees Democrat Morningstar and McClellan prevail with Republican Delphey facing retirement pressure. Mary land-wide results suggest a referendum angle on national politics.
Albert Morningstar edged incumbent Julien P. Delphey in subdistrict 3B with 7,386 votes. George H. Littrell and Thomas H. Hattery won the two 4A seats. In 3B top vote getter was Dr. James E. McClellan with 8,676 votes. Delphey 6,631. Donald T. Taylor 5,771. Morningstar credited voter knowledge and a positive campaign stance. The race results finalize an all-Democrat delegation for the district.
Tommy Dorsey defeated Republican Tod Salisbury to become Frederick County State's Attorney with 14,425 votes to 12,070 after full results. Salisbury conceded, praising supporters and noting future political involvement. Dorsey thanked family and said a deputy would be chosen from in-house staff or the Frederick County Bar Association.

Incumbent Democrat Galen R. Clagett won the county commission three race with 14,499 votes, 76 more than GOP challenger Anita Stup who had 14,423. In Maryland Tuesday Democrat gains dominated the ballot as Gov. Harry R Hughes secured a large victory to reclaim the State House. U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes led a decisive win over GOP challenger Lawrence J. Hogan, who conceded soon after polls closed. Sarbanes cited a call for fairness and opportunity and criticized NCPAC ads, while Hughes spoke from Lyric Theatre after securing a landslide win in the state.

Incumbent Congresswoman Leverly Byron won Tuesday night by a large margin over Dr Roscoe G Bartlett. In Frederick County she had 21,414 votes to 6,168, and in Allegany County Byron led 15,378 to 5,989 with 674 absentee ballots reported. Bartlett called to congratulate Byron as she spoke at her Frederick campaign HQ, noting the Democratic sweep nationwide and the feeling that the year favored Democrats.
Republican State Sen Edward P Thomas led Democratic Raymond W Kline in District 3 in Frederick County and carried 9 038 votes to 3 994. Charles H Smelser ran unopposed in District 4 with 8 728 Frederick County votes and 3 110 in Carroll County. Washington County totals gave Thomas 5 235 to 4 202 for Kline. Smelser, a four term senator from Union Bridge, will begin his fifth term and urges stronger local government and better small county representation.
The Frederick County Board session drew parents and others as the Family Life and Human Development Advisory Committee presented a year and half in the making report led by Chairman Sidney L. Bloom. The room was full and several attendees carried Bibles as the committee outlined past disagreements within its ranks. The report presentation continued at press time.
Republican Robert C. Snyder was elected Frederick Causty sheriff over Democrat William A. Boone by 2,700 votes 14 645 to 11 865 with all precincts reporting. Absentee ballots remain. Snyder, former Maryland State Police commander, praised turnout and pledged to implement policy driven leadership and select a qualified chief deputy within 35 days.
