Clapp rules accident not job related in Hammond case
A Maryland court directed a verdict for the defense in a Workman’s Compensation appeal. Judge Robert E. Clapp Jr. ruled Frances Hammond, manager at Eddie’s Cleaners Frederick Towne Mall store, was not in the course of employment when the Dec 24 1977 crash occurred. Hammond, who had taken on bank deposit duties after her employer’s heart attack, was riding with Marvin Wilder III to a department store and tavern before the accident that caused a broken hip and permanent nerve damage. Her counsel argued the injury occurred while performing a duty for her employer and while soliciting business for the linen service.
