Plane Flies Without Pilot Sparks Awe In Barnaby Field
An eager-beaver light plane taxied into life and took off without a pilot on Sunday. It circled for 45 minutes before landing upright in a field one mile west of here. Spectators stared as the craft bounced and settled, then flew beautifully again. The would-be pilot, Neil Haugerud, 28, watched in astonishment as the plane disappeared after he briefly turned the propeller. Haugerud, an insurance man and student pilot, has about a year of flight experience. On the Norfolk bound ship Uss Rushmore, radioman first class George A. Kessler, son of Frederick residents, serves with the Atlantic Fleet out of Norfolk, Virginia.
