Beached whale freed from sandbar near Newport News
A 55 to 60 foot finback whale was freed from a sandbar at the James River mouth and began swimming toward the Atlantic. Coast Guard crews used ropes and water hoses to keep the whale wet and monitored its condition with Virginia Institute of Marine Science biologists. The animal, sighted near shore around 300 feet offshore, later headed toward the Chesapeake Bay as responders guided it back to sea.
