Firefighters battled a five o'clock blaze at the deserted Woodsboro canning plant on Gravel Hill road. Four companies fought flames threatening nearby homes as wind spread sparks. The frame building, unused for 23 years, had unclear equipment inside, possibly junk machinery. Alleged acetylene torch use by workers Sunday was noted. Max Wagenberg once operated a veneer plant on the site. Southern States recently bought the property with plans for a business building. Fire units from Woodsboro New Midway Walkersville and Independents assisted.

Urbana Man Becomes Father Of Girl At 74
A 74 year old Urbana resident welcomed his daughter born at 9 35 this morning in Frederick Memorial Hospital. Roger Geisbert said his wife age 40 has made him proud and the baby will be named Catherine after her late sister Catherine Black of near Union Bridge. The couple also has a nine year old boy and an 11 year old girl. Hospital officials did not know the baby’s weight. Geisbert runs a farm and refinishes cabinets in his spare time and will be 75 next April.
