Spearhead for Health by the Ninth Evacuation Hospital
In a France front-line tent, the Ninth Evacuation Hospital under Col. William E. Stone recounts 25 months overseas with 75 percent of original personnel and 40,000 soldiers treated, including 7,000 in France. The unit, nicknamed Stones Rangers or The Fighting Ninth Evac, has two deaths in auto accidents and war-weariness tempered by camaraderie and grit. Nurses humor and longing mix with plans for warmth, stoves, and a Paris foray if winter eases.
