A convoy of about 30 trucks blocked streets near the White House to protest rising diesel prices and limits on competition with large trucking firms. Police escorted the group, which dispersed after about nine minutes, with plans to press for a meeting with White House aides.

County tax rate cuts mask higher overall spending

Frederick County commissioners cut the property tax rate by 12 cents yet the revised budget increases operating expenses by about 300 thousand dollars from the original plan. The rise is offset by a 416 thousand dollar cut in the capital budget and relies on over one million more in state shared taxes and miscellaneous revenue to keep the total near the higher spending level.

Summer concert lineup planned for Baker Park this year

City and county residents can enjoy a varied Baker Park bandshell series this summer staged by Mayor Ronald N. Young's office. The schedule opens June 3 with Frederick Community Orchestra conducted by Doris Petranek, then Navy Band's Country Current on June 10, Sweet Adelines on June 17, Pendulum rock on June 24, Browningsville Cornet Band on July 1, double headers July 8 and July 15, Dateline and Iron Duke's Members on July 15, and Port Authority Navy Band on July 22, with more details continued on page 49.

Carter wage control ruling declares program illegal

A federal judge held that President Carter exceeded presidential authority by tying federal contracts to wage price guidelines. Barrington D. Parker ruled the anti inflation effort cannot be sustained under the Constitution, though voluntary cooperation may continue. Sharp economic slowdown surfaces in April leading indicator

Washington AP reports the government’s index of leading indicators fell a record 3.3 percent in April, signaling a sharp slowing economy. Eight of ten components were negative, led by a 1.7 hour drop in the average workweek to 39.1 hours, with March revised up 0.3 percent.
