Inflation Costs Taxpayers Seven Billion Annually

Secretary Marshall told Congress inflation costs the United States about 7 billion dollars yearly in military supply purchases. He urged extending the 1950 Defense Production Act to curb inflation as critics and supporters spar over its renewal. Marshall linked inflation to higher war mobilization costs and predicted rising defense procurements through 1952 and beyond.

Price ceilings hike for Atlantic oils and beef price listings

The government authorized a 17 to 31 cent per barrel rise for residential fuel oils on the Atlantic seaboard. Meat markets nationwide received a two week extension until June 18 to post official beef ceiling prices. Farm prices trend lower for the third straight month, down about 1 percent in the month to May 15 yet still roughly 27 percent above a year ago. Whiskey and wines were removed from the general price freeze, permitting future price increases tied to rising production costs, though most changes won’t appear soon due to aging.
