Must Be Ready to Strike Hard Must Be Ready to Strike Hard
General Hoyt S. Vandenberg told the Senate committees the United States must build a massive Air Force to smash Soviet industry and destroy the Soviet Air Force with swift blows. He warned the force must grow beyond present pace as Russia expands long range air power and atomic stockpiles. He cited Roosevelt and urged a bold offensive strength, noting today the force is a large club and tomorrow could be a willow wand. He disputed that goals require as much as suggested, and said war with Russia is not inevitable though world peace seems limited. He opposed Red China’s UN entry and favored Formosa’s strategic value, aligning with MacArthur on Korea. He warned sixfold base losses could require a far larger force if bases abroad are not available.

Washington County teachers seek $300 starting pay raise
A Washington County delegation urged the Board of County Commissioners to raise starting teacher pay by 300 a year, estimating a 246000 annual cost. Superintendent William M Brish led the visit noting the current scale fails to attract new teachers, with 100 yearly increases to reach 4400. The proposal would start at 2700 and rise to 4400 over eighteen years, affecting 334 teachers next year and 231 at 200 increases. The board took no action. The National Education Association floated a possible house to house canvass to recruit grammar school teachers, citing a need for 80000 and only 32000 graduates available.
