Court Rebuffs Two Movie Writers In Supreme Court Bid
Washington May 29 two film writers John Howard Lawson and Dalton Trumbo were rebuffed in a second bid for Supreme Court review of contempt convictions for refusing to reveal if they were ever Communists. A final avenue remains for them though a rare special permit to file another petition for rehearing could be sought. If no further review, the government may seek penalties of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine each. Eight other Hollywood figures earlier cited for contempt face related actions. The high court declined to review the District Court ruling limiting free speech in the face of alleged threats to national welfare while six to two refused the earlier appeal.
