Denies Steel Monopoly Plan in High Profile Testimony
New York May 29 Judge Elbert H Gary chairman of United States Steel testified for the defense in the suit to dissolve the corporation under the Sherman anti trust law. He denied discussions of obtaining a monopoly or suppressing competition and described the enterprise as a complete proposition from ore mining to finished steel with aims to extend trade and foster competition. He said properties were valued fairly and that the Federal Steel Company was not a monopoly. He recalled no complaint during 1899 investigations by Congress or the Justice Department. He acknowledged some competition with Carnegie Steel but argued each firm had a natural trading territory and bulk product noncompetitive relations.
