New Lower Steel Prices Cut Many Rates Across Brass and Steel
Prices on sheet bars and related steel products drop by one to two cents per round with declines totaling the lowest in two years. Steel billets four inches square and larger fall by $2 per gross ton, sheet bars drop to $22 per gross ton, and plates, structurals, and galvanized sheets see varied reductions from 2 to 3 cents per pound or per large unit.

Washington May 30 The hours of service law for four railroad employees passed by Congress in 1907 was upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court in a test suit brought by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Justice Hughes announced a unanimous decision holding the statute plain that only interstate commerce and interstate carriers are affected. The ruling clarifies federal authority over trainmen and telegraph operators, limiting duty to sixteen consecutive hours for trainmen and nine or thirteen hours for telegraph operators, with rest periods and penalties specified.

Graft Charges Rise From State Department Portrait Deal
Washington May 30 hearing before the House committee on expenditures in the state department linked Col William H Michael former chief clerk and now US general consul at Calcutta to a questioned portrait payment. Philadelphia painter Albert Rosenthal says he was paid 550 for Justice Day portrait while records show 2450. Disbursing officer Morrision testified he paid 215 to Michael. Rosenthal asserts 830 was the agreed price. A later inquiry by Charles Dowie prompted Rosenthal to claim he overcharged by 8 dollars, with the voucher signer denying knowledge of the excess. The American Tobacco Company and its British and English affiliates were ruled a monopoly under the Sherman Act. The Supreme Court ordered dissolution and creation of a new compliant arrangement within six months, with possible 60 extra days if needed. Jealous man's crime ends in double tragedy at Decatur
Harvey Parker and his four year old daughter were found hanging by the rafters in a stable. Mrs. Parker cut down the child and resuscitated her, but the husband died.
