Teen in germ free cubicle dies at NIH in Maryland
A 17 year old boy, Teddy DeVita, who spent eight years in a 5 foot square germ free hospital cubicle at NIH to fight aplastic anemia died Tuesday. He contracted infections due to a severely compromised immune system and succumbed to complications from repeated blood transfusions. He was the son of the National Cancer Institute head and became a symbol of resilience as he continued to enjoy teen delights and hobbies within his restricted world.
