Loans stabilize income for Maryland farmers via ASCS programs
For over 40 years the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service provides commodity loans to producers to avert bankruptcy and keep farms in business. Authorized by the Commodity Credit Corporation in 1933, these loans give cash and allow crop storage for later sale. Participants in the Set-Aside program gain price support, disaster coverage, and reduced production incentives, with ASCS reporting 435 million dollars disbursed to Maryland farmers by May 1 and farmers having repaid 199 million of borrowed funds.
