Eisenhower signs farm bill creating soil bank and reforms

President Eisenhower signed the farm bill establishing a billion-dollar-a-year soil bank and new benefits for farmers. He cautioned that while many harmful provisions were removed or softened, some remain, and he criticized Congress for not authorizing up to 500 million dollars in advance soil bank payments. Benson praised the measure as constructive, noting some omitted provisions and new features.

Soil bank plan dominates union talk in agricultural bill

The bill centers on a soil bank allowing farmers to collect up to 1.2 billion dollars yearly in government benefits for withdrawing land from crop production. It also funds conservation measures and supports oats rye barley and sorghums at 76 percent parity without planting or marketing restrictions, while corn outside the major belt is supported at 84 percent parity. The secretary of agriculture is named to oversee the program as part of the legislation.

United Presbyterian Church Merger Plan Approved In U S A

The United States Assembly approves a union plan with the United Presbyterian Church despite a substitute name motion failing. The merged church would be United Presbyterian Church in the U S A, uniting about 2.7 million members with 250,000 from the United Presbyterian Church. The plan must be voted on by the smaller branch’s General Assembly on June 12-18 in Knoxville Kentucky before regional presbyteries decide.
