Defend Sheriffs Sybert Says Injunction Challenge
Baltimore officials said Attorney General C Ferdinand Sybert will defend two Southern Maryland sheriffs against an injunction aimed at blocking enforcement of a new anti slot machine law. The case centers on St Marys and Charles counties where sheriffs enforced licenses on pier operators and a ferry boat. The injunction, issued May 22 by Judge Philip Dorsey, bars enforcing the June 1 law that would revoke Virginia shore slot licenses if operable from Maryland.

Broader Unemployment Relief Bill Spurned
Washington AP reports the Senate rejected a Kennedy backed substitute and moved to accept the House unemployment relief bill allowing federal loans to extend benefits by up to 3 percent, about 13 extra weeks, if states participate. Kennedy called it a do nothing bid, while the House measure would trigger payroll tax hikes if loans aren’t repaid by 1983. Seventeen Democrats and three Republicans supported Kennedy. 49 Republicans and 23 Democrats opposed.
