Twenty One Men Dead in Dayton Coal Mine Explosion
In Dayton Tennessee on May 28 a gas dust explosion at the Richland mine of the Dayton Coal and Iron company killed 21 men and injured several more. A dynamite cartridge misfired igniting coal dust, with 34 workers underground. 21 died, nine burned, four escaped. All victims were Dayton residents. The mine, near Richland, is owned by Glasgow capitalists and connects to a local iron furnace. A similar 1895 Neilson mine blast nearby killed 27.

On the presidential special returning home from the West the party passed Wyoming towns with brief water stops at Rawhius Laramie and Lahey enne. Mrs McKinley appeared cheerful as crowds and cowboys waved from stations along the route. Arrival in Washington expected at 7 30 Thursday morning.

Presbyterian Assembly Adopts Revision Report In New York
Philadelphia May 23 A unani mous vote by the Presbyterian general assembly adopted the special committee on revision of the confession of faith. Moderator Minton hailed a victory for all and New York was chosen as next meeting city. The assembly also created a permanent judicial committee with no appeal from its rulings and backed consolidation of Louisville and Danville seminaries. Rev Dr James P D Moffat led the drive for unity and Dr Charles A Dickey praised the peace and progress ahead.
