Police to step up patrols for Memorial Day weekend
Maryland State Police and Frederick County agencies will increase highway patrols beginning 6 p.m. Friday for a Safe holiday weekend. Traffic safety programs such as Spider, DWI, County Measures, and CARE will be active with aerial speed enforcement to deter speeding and crashes near eight area high schools and during graduation events. Officers will monitor school areas and assist as needed to keep the weekend peaceful after five highway deaths this year.

Serviceman convicted of carrying a handgun
A Frederick County jury convicted Werbert Henry Brooks of carrying or transporting a handgun after two days of testimony about a Christmas Eve disturbance at the Red Horse Steak House. They found no conviction for firing the .38 derringer at Officer Jay Warren Friend. The trial featured conflicting testimony from correctional officers and witnesses, with defense arguing Brooks acted in self defense and was provoked. Judge William W. Wenner sentenced Brooks to time served, effectively a four month and 22 day term.
