Bill Budd Dead a Black Leader in Philadelphia

Henry Franklin known as Bill Budd died in Philadelphia after a long life. Born into slavery, he was son of Jared Franklin, slave to J Ross Key. Sold at nine to Abraham Shimer, he won freedom at thirty and moved to Pennsylvania. Since 1865 he was janitor at the Academy of Fine Arts, with white hair and dignified bearing, living to 85. Larier family ties linger in Uniontown. eleven ladies visited him two years ago.

May meeting of St Mark's Doubs Lutheran ladies

The St Mark's Lutheran church ladies in Doubs held their May meeting with scriptural readings, recitations, songs, and a report on committees. Miss Maggie Myers gave an essay, others performed pieces, and Amanda Berek led a recitation. funds and benediction closed the gathering.

Mr Charles W Waits appointed teacher at Poolesville and Mr Horace Davis appointed at Sugar Land School. Mr Thos J Bowie named keeper of the tollgate on 7th street pike at Olney. Howard Eng land son of John G Eng land of Reskville begins clerkship with the Merchants Protective Association in Baltimore. A Friday hop at Olney Grange Hall in Montgomery County drew a large crowd with lively dancing past 2am and midnight refreshments of sandwiches and hot coffee.

An election at the Frederick County National Bank chose directors for the Frederick and Washington Turnpike Company. The board then elected Geo Markell as President, W I Parsons as Secretary, and Doha H Williams as Treasurer.

Burglary in D A Rober store at Trego shocks town

Sunday burglary at D A Rober store in Trego, the Roberaville B and O station, yielded 360 in cash from an iron safe and boots and general merchandise. Suspects described as two medium height tramps aged 20 and 22 were traced to nearby towns but not caught. Mayor Doll and local deputies, along with city police, searched tramps' rendezvous without success. Four years earlier the same store was robbed with no clues. Lectures and church notes follow with Rev F C Klein to speak at Buckeystown on Japan places of interest, and U B church announcements of an upcoming Bible reading led by Miss Mary Ruprecht.

Strawberry Festival at Mt Airy church aims to raise funds

The Ladies Aid Society of Pinkney Memorial P. E. church Mt Airy Mu hosts an ice cream and strawberry festival at Masara A. Anderson & Co's hall on Friday and Saturday evenings June 7 and 8. Proceeds benefit the church. Public is invited.
