Buckner Traded From Cubs to Red Sox for Eckersley
Bill Buckner, the 34 year old left handed first baseman and former NL batting champion, was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Boston Red Sox for right handed pitcher Dennis Eckersley. The Cubs also received minor league infielder Mike Brumley in the deal. Buckner expressed mixed emotion about leaving Chicago and looked forward to a fresh start in Boston. Eckersley, 29, joined Boston in 1978 and posted a strong 20 win pace in his best seasons, with a 124 102 lifetime record and a 4.01 ERA this year. Cubs manager Jim Frey said the move addresses pitching needs for the team.
