Heyerdahl sails papyrus raft Ra toward Americas
Thor Heyerdahl set out from Safi Morocco aboard the 55 foot papyrus raft Ra with six companions to test if ancient Egyptians could have carried their culture to the New World 5000 years ago. The crew includes Norman Baker Yuri Denkevich George Sourial Abdoulaye Dibrine Carlo Mauri and Santiago Genoves. The vessel relies on oars and a sail and carries modern gear for navigation and a limited supply of food and water. The team aims for the Yucatan Peninsula in three to four months amid skepticism about raft durability.
