China’s stalled industry reflects a Soviet legacy and poor economy
Charles Lynch reports from Peking on China’s industrial woes. He notes most heavy industry dates from under 16 years ago and relied on Soviet support. At plants in Changchun and Shenyang, production is slow and limited, with the No. 1 automobile factory failing to produce cars beyond a handful of Red Flag limousines. The assembly line moves slowly, and shortages linger as workers try to improvise beyond outdated tooling and imports.
