Pay as you go tax plan clears Senate House talks

A Senate House conference committee approved a pay as you go tax plan ending four months of strife. It wipes out a year's income tax for those with liability of 50 dollars or less and abates three fourths for all others. The remaining quarter is paid in two installments with a 20 percent withholding on wages. The measure aims to freeze current rates this year.

War Labor Board Opens Way For Miner Wage Increases

The War Labor Board ruled for wage increases for soft coal miners and directed operators to negotiate on underground travel costs and tool expenses. It denied a $2-a-day boost but signaled a rise of over a dollar daily, with miners and UMW leader John L. Lewis weighing acceptance as a 15 day truce ends. A proposed expert commission could study working conditions and efficiency, while labor members urged a $2 daily rise citing cost of living.
