Power outlook secure in region says Allegheny VP

Allegheny Power official Karl Pfirrmann said multi state area can rely on electricity for at least five years with reserves 12 to 18 percent above average demand. He spoke at a Frederick County Chamber event amid talks of new plants as aging facilities near retirement and three firms eye sites near major transmission lines. Mirant Corp filed a plan to add a 700 megawatt gas fired plant in Dickerson Maryland. Eastalco Works representatives attended. Adams town site discussed for a potential new plant with Duke Energy among firms in talks. The California crisis was cited as backdrop for concern over hot summer and rolling blackouts.

Mooney veto over tax refund bill shocks Maryland capital

Maryland Senator Alex Mooney complained Gov. Parris Glendening vetoed his bill shielding a Frederick resident from bureaucratic delay. Mooney aimed to help Cmdr. Douglas Deilinger seek a refund on state taxes after a long Navy dismissal case. The bill passed both houses unanimously before Glendening vetoed it May 17, promising an override or reintroduction in 2002.

FCC grads achieve role model status

Paman Dies In Fall At Pen Mar Park

A man identified as Paman died after falling from a precipice at Pen Mar Park in Mar County. Deputy C S Howard of the Washington County Sheriff reported the incident occurred around 5 45 pm as Milton Bloom of Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co said the group stood on a popular hang glider precipice, he lost balance and fell near rescue time.

Lawmaker ends Potomac bridge study plan in Virginia
