Red Cross Honors Gene Capino For Saving a Girl

Lt. Gene Capino of Eastalco Aluminum Company's security service received the National Red Cross Award of Merit for selfless action saving a 14 year old girl, Susan Nagle, struck March 8, 1972. The citation commends his first aid and leadership at the scene and notes the girl's survival due to his timely aid before ambulance arrival.

C and O Canal Park plan to be aired in Brunswick

The revised master plan for Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park will be discussed in a public information meeting at 8 p.m. on Wednesday June 7 at Brunswick Senior High School. Frederick County residents oppose potential land condemnation and will voice concerns at the Brunswick session as part of a tour of meetings across the region.

Bank Names Summers To Board

Vernon Summers assistant vice president and manager of the Frederick Office of Maryland National Bank has been appointed to the Frederick County Advisory Board. A Frederick native, Summers is a Frederick High School graduate with AA and LLB degrees from the University of Baltimore. He served in 1943 overseas in France and the Rhineland and later as Lt Colonel in the 97th USARCOM Fort Meade.

Injured City Woman Sues Over Fatal East Church Crash

Mrs. Julia Elizabeth Ridenour of East Church Street sues Arnold Filmore Nalley in a $100000 claim alleging negligence and DUI after a May 15 crash on East Church Street near her home. Grimes, 30, Frederick High teacher, was killed. Nalley faces manslaughter and traffic charges. District court hearings set for July 6.

City Keeps Tax Rate At 1.70 For 1972 73 Budget

Frederick City will maintain the 1.70 per 100 assessment tax rate for the 1972 73 fiscal year as a 4 059 795 budget is unanimously approved by the Mayor and board. The plan notes higher costs from a 34.6 percent electric rate rise and a 119 000 drop in state Police Protection Fund support over two years. The budget awaits final form and public review before adoption at a June 15 Board of Equalization session.

The Braddock Heights Ski-Way liquor license hearing was continued due to unprepared opposition from area residents and the Frederick County WCTU. Five WCTU officers and three Braddock Heights residents protested a request to sell and serve beer wine and liquor with package sales. The hearing was reset to next Thursday at 11 a.m.

Hughes to address MSM graduates at commencement

Senator Harold Hughes of Iowa will address Mount St. Mary’s College graduates this Sunday at 2 30 p m outside Flynn Hall. He will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree for humanitarian service. Archbishop Han nan also gets an honorary degree, and Dr W B Cadle earns an honorary degree for 40 years of medical service to Emmitsburg and the college community. The Class of 1972 includes 247 bachelor degree recipients and eight MA diplomas.

Child Dies From Injuries In Auto Crash

A two year old from Frederick died at Walter Reed Hospital from injuries in a head on collision on US 15 on May 15. Michael Anthony Buehler age 2 of Waverley Gardens was a passenger in his mother’s car. The mother Mary Biscoff Buehler 21 suffered a broken back and was discharged. The other driver Franklin Edward Biffle 43 of Frederick was listed in satisfactory condition at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
