Probes Consider Rising Sugar Price Plan
Washington AP The Agriculture Department says the sugar price surge will burst from ample world supplies and welcomes congressional hearings to probe soaring costs. Undersecretary Murphy notes large new commitments from foreign suppliers push 1963 U S sugar totals well above last year's consumption. He warns buyers may lose when prices fall. Senate leaders Mansfield Byrd and Rep Sullivan plan hearings to examine surpluses, quotas and possible bottler and baker impacts as prices have jumped from 9.45 to 14.05 per hundred pounds in Montana and other states.
