Relief problem in Western Maryland puzzles readers
In Western Maryland three counties Frederick Washington and Allegany face a paradox of unemployment amid agricultural wealth. Frederick reports 1192 relief-receiving families about 4000 dependents with old-age pensions aid to dependent children and the blind and public assistance. WPA and Resettlement support mitigate others while local funds are scarce and a bank failure lingers in Frederick. Districts blame industry density farm wage pressures and high living standards for persistent relief burdens, with Carroll and St Mary's contrasting relief levels.
